« Je me souviens très bien de ma visite au Maple Leaf Gardens, situé à l’intersection des rues Carlton et Church à Toronto, Ontario, Canada, en 2013. Le bâtiment a été construit à l’origine pour accueillir des matchs de hockey, mais il a depuis été adapté pour accueillir une épicerie et plusieurs autres commodités. Cette visite a été une expérience agréable qui m’a aidé à décider de m’installer dans la région.

Les espaces ouverts du bâtiment étaient très éclairés et colorés, avec des graphiques à grande échelle et un rayon alimentaire bien organisé qui transformait la tâche banale de l’épicerie en une destination unique. Cette transformation a mis en valeur la riche histoire du site, qui était auparavant utilisé pour accueillir divers événements sportifs et autres.

En outre, le fait que les niveaux supérieurs du bâtiment soient restés intacts en tant qu’arène sportive, aujourd’hui connue sous le nom de Mattamy Athletic Centre, montre comment différentes utilisations peuvent coexister au sein d’un même bâtiment et comment la réutilisation adaptative peut représenter divers aspects de la vie urbaine contemporaine. » (Livret Expériences Vécues Positives de la Qualité dans l’Environnement Bâti 2024, p.54).

« I vividly remember my visit to Maple Leaf Gardens, located at the intersection of Carlton Street and Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada back in 2013. The building was originally constructed as an indoor arena for hosting hockey games but has since been adapted to include a grocery store and several other amenities. This visit was an enjoyable experience that helped me decide to move to the area.

The building’s open spaces were brightly lit and colourful, with large-scale graphics and a well-curated food department that transformed the mundane task of grocery shopping into a unique destination. This transformation played up the rich history of the site, which was previously used for hosting various sports and other events.

Moreover, keeping the upper levels of the building intact as a sports arena, now known as the Mattamy Athletic Centre, demonstrates how different uses can coexist within a single building, and how adaptive reuse can represent diverse aspects of contemporary urban life. » (Booklet Positive Lived Experiences of Quality in the Built Environment 2024, p.54)
